“A Game Design Document describes every aspect of a game concept in a single treatment suitable for presentation to publishers, financiers and developers.
The objective of this project is to re-imagine an existing Intellectual Property (IP) or franchise to meet the demands of a modern audience. You will create a comprehensive Game Design Document, which will be the source document for upcoming projects in Year Two. A selection of games available for reinvention will be provided.
You must ‘pitch’ your nascent game concept to validate further research-and-development, taking the GDD through to completion following feedback from the pitch.
The completed Game Design Document will outline all key elements of your game concept, and should include persuasive imagery, prototype artwork, narrative, and thorough explanation of your game's core mechanics. It will also evidence research into proposed audience, platform, and marketing.”
Two examples of work that had shown in example for both the pitch and design document highlighted the importance of conveying the Game Concept well. I think this is something I should pay close attention to as with the pitch that needs to be given I will be selling my conceptual game to an audience and to do that well I need to have successfully illustrated:
-The Core Game Mechanics
- Intended Audience
- Characters and Backstory
- Controls and Console
Another thing I should keep in mind is the timeframe for the project – which is 3 weeks. In those 3 weeks I will have to create:
-A Design Document outlining the above points in a crisp and professional standard.
-A 10 minute pitch that has to be delivered to an audience in the tone of a professional games pitch (which will also have to illustrate the game concept).
